The need for affordable, high-quality daycare is rising in North York. We were given the responsibility of building a brand-new, 5,750 square foot, one-story extension at St. Roch Catholic Elementary School with the express purpose of housing a state-of-the-art childcare facility. The idea entailed establishing a secure and supportive setting where the upcoming generation could start their educational journey.

The Challenge

The “active campus” element is the largest obstacle to any school-based construction. Our team had to be extremely disciplined when it came to site logistics because we were building a large extension while the elementary school was in full session.

Our institutional contractors created physical barriers between the school areas and the construction zone since safety is our first priority. Continuous communication with the school administration was necessary to oversee the delivery of bulky materials and plan noisy work during school hours. Our goal was to be “invisible” partners getting the job done efficiently without disrupting the learning happening just a few meters away.

Why This Project Was Essential

For many families in North York, finding reliable childcare close to home or better yet, at the same location as their older children’s school, was much needed. This project was essential because it created a “one-stop” educational hub for parents.

We provided dedicated spaces for infants and preschoolers, such that St. Roch can now support families much earlier in their child’s development. They wanted the transition from childcare to elementary school to be more seamless for the children and help them feel comfortable and confident in a familiar environment from a very young age.

Scope of Work

Our institutional contractors handled every aspect of this 5,750 sq. ft. build, so the interior was as functional as the exterior was inviting. This project included:

• Modern Interior Facilities, where we constructed specialized rooms, each meant for a certain age group. We installed custom cubbies, change rooms, a full-service laundry room, and a dedicated servery for meal prep.
  
  
• Administrative & Utility Space: We built out staff offices and a secure “link” that connected the new addition directly to the existing elementary school.
  
  
• The “Adventure” Outdoors:
  • Natural Play Elements: Balance logs and sandboxes to encourage motor skill development.
  • Creative Stations: Exterior chalkboards and wood benches for outdoor learning.
  • Safety & Aesthetics: Ornamental fencing for security, storage containers for play equipment, and various plantings to create a green, welcoming atmosphere.
